I think giving money to a person for their birthday isn’t tacky/lazy/mean. If you don’t know what they want and don’t have much of an idea what they want, then it’s fine! In fact, I daresay that it’s better than buying them something, since there’s a pretty high chance you’ll get them something they don’t like.
On the other hand, if you have been told over and over by that person that that person wants a certain object, you have no excuse for not buying what they asked for (provided that it’s within your budget).

Oh, yes, I most definitely agree. Especially when one isn’t quite a friend, but more of a, well, a relatively close acquaintance. I mean, at least you’ve given them *something*, rather than just ignored the whole birthday thing.
AGREED except for very very close friends as you usually know what they particularly want (:
